Are there different classes of electric bikes?

There are three generally accepted classes of e-bikes right now:

  • Class 1: Class 1 e-bikes are limited to a top speed of 20 miles per hour, and the electric motor works only when the rider is pedaling (true assist), Typically, Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on bike paths and bike lanes that are shared with traditional bicycles
  • Class 2: These are still limited to 20 mph but can have a throttle. Typically, Class 2 e-bikes are also allowed on bike paths and bike lanes that are shared with traditional bicycles
  • Class 3: Class 3 e-bikes can go up to 28 miles per hour and must have a speedometer but may or may not have a throttle. Class 3 e-bike laws vary greatly from state to state in the US and in general across the world
